You don't have to choose between the relationship and the rules

Exodus 20: 16-17:

“16 “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

17 “You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.”

God's people are to reflect God's character

Philippians 4:10-13

“10 I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at length you have revived your concern for me. You were indeed concerned for me, but you had no opportunity. 11 Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. 12 I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. 13 I can do all things through him who strengthens me.”

Replace covetous thoughts with thoughts of thankfulness

The Gospel is not about how well you follow the law, it's about how perfectly Jesus followed the law for you
