10 And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. – Luke 2:10-11
Prayer Focus #1: The Unreached
This Christmas, while we celebrate the birth of Jesus freely in a part of the world with great access to the gospel, billions of people are going on about their day, never having heard the truth of who HE is.
May the heaviness of this reality fall to rest on us as we attempt to grasp the unfathomable, relentless, pursuing, perfect, uncompromising love of God made flesh in the manger over 2000 years ago.
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He came to seek and to save the lost. We absolutely should celebrate this truth with abandon this Christmas. We are sinners, saved by grace. Grace we did not earn, grace we do not deserve.
But let us also remember and pray for the many who have not heard that there is great reason to celebrate.
For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” – Romans 10:13-15
This Christmas, let’s bring HIM our utmost worship!
But let us also remember those in prayer who have yet to raise a voice of praise to the Lamb who is worthy!
Then I looked, and I heard around the throne and the living creatures and the elders the voice of many angels, numbering myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice,
“Worthy is the Lamb who was slain,
to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might
and honor and glory and blessing!”
And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying,
“To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb
be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!” – Revelation 5:11-13
Prayer Focus #2: The Persecuted
While we in the decorate our Christmas trees, sing our carols, hang our lights, shop for those last minute gifts and prepare to eat more than we should with family and friends during this Christmas season, many followers of Christ are being arrested, persecuted and even killed for their faith.
Believers carefully plan for their secret gatherings to celebrate the coming of their Savior with a handful of others – but sometimes their plans fall into the hands of the wrong people. Celebrations are often raided and those attending are often taken off to face interrogation and imprisonment.
As you attend church this Christmas, take a few moments to pray:
- Pray for the safety and joy, of believers in areas that experience great persecution for their faith especially as they risk much by gathering with other Christians.
- Ask God to comfort and provide for the needs of the families whose fathers, mothers, or siblings are imprisoned, and for the persecuted themselves.
- Pray that God would make Himself known to the persecutors through those they are persecuting in powerful and life-changing ways.
Remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them, and those who are mistreated, since you also are in the body. – Hebrews 13:3
