What Does the Bible teach about abortion?

The topic of abortion is not only personally and politically charged. It is spiritually charged as well. There are a number of differing opinions about whose rights apply where in the argument. When you take one’s personal, political, and spiritual persuasions, and mix a little bit of science, it’s cocktail of frustration and confusion. We believe that there’s general agreement among the conservative evangelical community that God is the author of life. We believe from passages in Scripture like Ps. 139:13-16 that God says we are “fearfully and wonderfully made.” In other words, we are not the result of random chemicals coming together. Rather, we are the special creation of God. In Job 31:15, it states that God has “knitted” people together in their mother’s womb.

At this time, there are approxmiately 1,000,000 abortions annually in the US (a number is declining). In the majority of cases, this means that large a number of young women and men make abortive decisions to relieve what they feel to be the short-term concern of caring for a child. However, what doesn’t get discussed as much is the longer-term guilt that a lot of these abortive parents struggle with in future years. It’s important for all of us to know that there’s room in the grace of God, no matter what our sin…sin that we all have. Rom. 8:1 says that there is today no condemnation for those who are in Christ. Even self-condemnation was erased by Jesus on the cross. Anyone who seeks to put their life into the hands of their Creator can come to Him. This means that we find spiritual healing and forgiveness, as we submit our lives to Him, because we believe that is best.
