Prayer and Praise Report from the Field – Chile

The team begins their journey home tonight and after a busy 5 days in country, there is much to be thankful for and much to remain in prayer about.  Please take some time this week to read through the updates provided by the team leader and pray that God would continue His work in mighty ways!

Thursday

The team arrived in La Serena safely and lead a leadership training for our partner church, La Fuente de Vida.  The primary focus was to help them with multiplying leaders and empowering the lay people to help in the work of the ministry. We studied Ephesians 4:1-16 together.

  • Please pray that God would use this passage of scripture to help shape and define His church in Chile.

I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. But grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift. Therefore it says,

“When he ascended on high he led a host of captives,
and he gave gifts to men.”

(In saying, “He ascended,” what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower regions, the earth?  10 He who descended is the one who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.) 11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, 14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. 15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.

Friday

We began the day by traveling to a local medical post.  We set up a table to offer prayer for those coming for medical help. The rest of our team divided into 2 groups to prayer walk the neighborhood.

  • Pray that the Lord would do a mighty work in those that were prayed for during this time.  Pray that if they do not know Jesus as Lord that God would unite them with a local follower of Christ who could share the good news and disciple them in faith.

After lunch, we had another leadership training session. This focused on small group structure and administration (continued on Sunday).

  • Pray that the Chilean church seeks to be the church that God would have them be.  Pray that they stand firm amidst pressure to do things the way that they have always been done for the sake of tradition.  Pray that they strive to honor the Lord above all and that they have the courage to change their strategies in order to reach the lost.

Saturday

We began by traveling to Coquimbo to visit a local farmer’s market.  We passed out gospel tracts and invitations to a church event that night to those in the market.  After lunch, we visited some neighbors of the church to offer to pray with them and to share the Gospel with them.  Our team was able to pray with multiple families.  Further, one of the families (Johnnie and Celia) chose to pray to receive Christ while we were visiting with them!

  • Pray for Johnnie and Celia!  Praise the Lord for a new brother and sister in Christ.

And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, 10 so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, 11 filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God. (Philippians 1:9-11)

That night, our team helped our brothers and sisters lead an evangelistic event in Coquimbo.  Brian B. shared his story powerfully and invited people to trust Christ as he has.

  • Pray that the words that were shared would resonate in the hearts and minds of the people who heard.  Pray that their eyes would be opened to the truth.

“for what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake.” (2 Corinthians 4:5)

Sunday

We were able to lead Sunday School in Coquimbo with our brothers and sisters.  We studied 1 Peter 1 together. In particular, we looked at our identity in Christ and the reality that this great gift is wholly of the Lord.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. (1 Peter 1:3-5)

After lunch, we were able to lead another multi-hour training session on leading and structuring lifegroups.

Monday

Monday morning we met for prayer with our brothers and sisters in Chile.  We then went to a local farmer’s/flea market to share the Gospel via tracks and conversation.  One person prayed to receive Christ during this time!

We then travelled to La Higuerra, which is a town about one hour north of La Serena which currently has no evangelical work.  Pastor Nilo shared his hope of starting an evangelical bible study in this town which would serve to help reach the neighboring villages.  We also spent time praying over the town and for this future bible study.

14 For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named,16 that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love,18 may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

20 Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen. (Ephesians 3: 14-21)

In the evening, we led a small group for professionals.  We discussed how it is vital to keep a healthy rhythm in our lives by regularly having time in Scripture, prayer and by taking Sabbath.
