All Authority

18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.  19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,  20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” – Matthew 28:18-20
Often referred to as the Great Commission, these words were among the last recorded words of Jesus before His ascended to heaven.  Although sometimes treated as such, these words were not offered as a suggestion.  Jesus was giving a clear directive to those who followed Him.  We’ll take the next couple of weeks to pray through this passage together.  Let’s pray that God shapes us into the disciple making disciples He has called us to be. This week, let’s set our eyes on who Jesus is, in light of His direction for us to follow.
Prayer Focus #1: Authority
  • Pray that the Lord Jesus reveals to us in a new and personal way that He is the long awaited Messiah.  He is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

4 As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. 5 Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall become straight, and the rough places shall become level ways, 6 and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.'” – Luke 3:4-6

  • Pray that the Lord deepens our understanding of His authority.  We need not fear the purpose the Lord has placed on our lives.  We need not fear the idea of making disciples. We need not fear he step of obedience that He is calling us to next for the sake of His Kingdom. He has been given ALL authority in heaven and on earth.  and as His disciples, He allows us to enter into that authority – not for our own glory, but for His Glory.

17 The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!” 18 And he said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you.  20 Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” – Luke 10: 17-20

Prayer Focus #2: Go Therefore
  • Pray that as we understand the authority in which we are sent, we obediently Go.  Pray that the truth of the gospel becomes so glaringly real in our own lives that we are compelled by His great love for us into His harvest.
  • Pray that God calls us up and sends us out for the sake of the Gospel.
    • Pray that we be sent to the nations (see next prayer point) and to our neighborhoods (see prayer focus #3)
    • LifePoint has a team of 9 headed to the Caribbean at the end of this week.  Please pray that the team would be strengthened and empowered by the Holy Spirit to do the work that God has prepared for them.

Pray Focus #3: Delaware Launch Prayer Points

  • Pray for the work that is being done to the building this week. Although we recognize that the “church” is not a building in an of itself –  it is still important to us that an environment is created in which will allow people to comfortably gather, connect and to worship the Lord together.  We are reflooring, reconstructing a stage, installing audiovisual equipment, and setting up all of our kids environments. This is a busy week, and we’re asking that God oversees the work that both our folks and the Seventh-day Adventist folks are doing
  • Pray for our first preview service this Sunday, February 28th. This is the first time LifePoint Delaware will meet as a family of believers on a Sunday morning.
  • Pray for our various ministry teams: Connections, LifePoint Kids, Students, Security/Parking, Worship & Arts, and Set-up / Tear-down. Pray that God would move on the hearts of those not yet serving and that he would encourage those who already are. Pray for the leaders of these ministry teams.
