…The LORD has sought out a man after his own heart… – 1 Samuel 13:14
There was only one man in the Bible who is called “a man after God’s own heart.” Why was David given such a description? He was a shepherd boy made king, exalted by God into a position of honor and responsibility, but we know from looking at his life that he was not a perfect man. In fact, he was guilty of some very heinous things. However, despite his sinful nature and his weakness, David had a deep understanding of God’s grace and lived out sincere repentance. David was a man who reflected God’s heart… he pursued God’s heart. He had a relentless faith that led this man of incredible stature to dance with abandon before the ark of His God. As you read through the psalms, it doesn’t take long to see that David knew and understood God’s desire to be known throughout the earth and he desired to do everything He could to bring the Lord the honor and worship that He deserved. His writings are full of earnest prayers that God’s glory be known among all nations.
Are we a church that pursues God’s heart? Do we live with intention for the One who make all things new? How do we truly become Christ-like? One author puts it this way, “You pursue the things in which Christ is interested. You begin to pursue His heart, His interests, what is on His mind, and you cannot help but begin reflecting what He is interested in, what He is concerned about, His attitudes.” Let us pursue the very heart of God… Lord, make us a church that looks and lives like Jesus!
Prayer Focus #1: Passion for God (Psalm 1)
- Pray that the way of the Lord is a delight to us, that we would meditate on it day and night.
- Pray that as we seek Him and His heart, He would bear fruit in and through our lives. Pray that we would be a living testimony of His love, His power, and His goodness.
- The Lord knows our ways, pray that He would expose wickedness that hides in our hearts. Pray that as our sin is exposed, we do not hide from God or grieve the work of the Holy Spirit, but that we move forward, in His forgiveness and grace, with repentant hearts.
1 Blessed is the man
who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
2 but his delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law he meditates day and night.
3 He is like a tree
planted by streams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
and its leaf does not wither.
In all that he does, he prospers.
4 The wicked are not so,
but are like chaff that the wind drives away.
5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;
6 for the Lord knows the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish.
Prayer Focus #2: King of the Nations (Psalm 96)
Do we desire that the Lord be glorified above all throughout the world?
- Pray that God would set our eyes on the things that are above, not the things that are on earth.
- Pray that the Holy Spirit would renew our minds to think with an eternal perspective, that we would truly learn to seek first the Kingdom of God.
Oh sing to the Lord a new song;
sing to the Lord, all the earth!
2 Sing to the Lord, bless his name;
tell of his salvation from day to day.
3 Declare his glory among the nations,
his marvelous works among all the peoples!
4 For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised;
he is to be feared above all gods.
5 For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols,
but the Lord made the heavens.
6 Splendor and majesty are before him;
strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.
7 Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples,
ascribe to the Lord glory and strength!
8 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
bring an offering, and come into his courts!
9 Worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness;[a]
tremble before him, all the earth!
10 Say among the nations, “The Lord reigns!
Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved;
he will judge the peoples with equity.”
11 Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice;
let the sea roar, and all that fills it;
12 let the field exult, and everything in it!
Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for joy
13 before the Lord, for he comes,
for he comes to judge the earth.
He will judge the world in righteousness,
and the peoples in his faithfulness.
Prayer Focus #3: Jesus Known
In Habakkuk, we see an incredible promise. The earth WILL be filled with the knowledge of the glory of God.
For the earth will be filled
with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord
as the waters cover the sea. – Habakkuk 2:14
And the light of the knowledge of the glory of God has been shone in our hearts… in the face of Jesus.
6 For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. – 2 Corinthians 4:6
We have been given the light of the knowledge of the glory of God. We cannot remain silent. May the earth be filled with His glory.
Pray earnestly that the Lord of the harvest sends laborers!
