Pray for Cuba

On Monday morning a team of 9 from LifePoint arrived back in the US after a week of prayer and ministry alongside the church in Cuba. God is moving in Cuba in ways that haven’t been seen in recent history and perhaps as never before in the history of this incredibly beautiful and resilient island nation. In spite of the turmoil and persecution that the church has faced over the past 57 years under an oppressive regime, it has flourished and is stronger today that it has ever been.

During our week in Cuba we had the privilege of working with pastors from 3 different churches who are instrumental in leading the underground church movement that is exploding from one end of the island to the other. In 2010, we began working along side one small church that was meeting in a carport at the home of one of these pastors and over the past 6 years this small congregation has grown into a network of over 300 churches meeting in homes all across the island.

Through the work and movement of the Holy Spirit these churches are winning people to Christ, discipling them in what it means to be a follower of Jesus and multiplying those believers out to start new churches in cities and communities all throughout the nation. These believers are ostracized and oppressed by their government but no amount of oppression has been able to stop the movement of the gospel among a people who regularly lay it all on the line for the sake of the expansion of God’s kingdom.

As you pause to pray during TEN:TWO today please lift up these things:

  1. Pray for wisdom, safety and protection for the leaders and believers. Just a few weeks ago a Cuban pastor was arrested and while he was being questioned and held in a local prison, the government went to his home and tore it down. Similarly, one of the pastors that we know very well had his church and home threatened by government officials a few weeks ago.  However, after a night of prayer the government official was very suddenly, and seemingly without cause, removed from her position and the threat to the church left with her.
  1. Pray for the house church movement. Many of these believers live on just a few dollars a month and the church has very few resources to meet the increasing demand for discipleship resources and physical resources as they minister to one another and the needs of the community members that live around them.
  1. Pray about how you are investing financially through Wide Open World. A portion of that fund goes to meeting the needs of the church in Cuba and bringing the gospel to this nation where God is very actively at work.
  1. The pastor from our partner church in Chile was able to join our LP mission team in Cuba. He connected really well with the pastor and church on the island and a new partnership seems to be emerging between those 2 churches. Please pray for this relationship as they continue to support and learn from one another.

Here are 3 passages that are visibly on display each day in the lives of the Cuban believers.

1 Thessalonians 2:7-8

But we were gentle among you, like a nursing mother taking care of her own children. So, being affectionately desirous of you, we were ready to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you had become very dear to us.

2 Corinthians 1:12

12 For our boast is this, the testimony of our conscience, that we behaved in the world with simplicity and godly sincerity, not by earthly wisdom but by the grace of God, and supremely so toward you.

Hebrews 12:28-29

28 Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe, 29 for our God is a consuming fire.

Pray that these verses would become even more apparent to those who don’t know Christ and more foundational for those who chose to live for eternal things in a world that offers them very little in this lifetime.
